Meyhané (pronounced, may-ha-neh) is a very old expression used commonly in the Balkans and Anatolia deriving from "mey" (wine) and "hane" (tavern). For hundreds of years, fine musicians performed at these "wine-taverns". Patrons enjoying an aperitif were enthralled by the ageless, exotic sounds of the old Meyhane. The Meyhane of yesteryear greeted its eclectic audiences with violins, ouds, lutes, sazs, upright pear-shaped fiddles, cane flutes, subtle percussion and enchanting vocals. Performers hypnotised the audience with fine musicianship.

A dedicated group of “ocean warriors” have set up trivia night to raise funds for the marine conservation efforts of Sea Shepherd, a non-profit organisation. Sea Shepherd is active in intervening to stop illegal fishing and poaching of marine wildlife.

WHIRLING FURPHIES
Australia’s pre-eminent 1990’s folk rock band, the Whirling Furphies have re-emerged a decade and a half later as a surprise contender for the title of Australia’s pre-eminent 2010’s folk rock band.
The Furphies stormed into the Australian folk scene in the early 90’s with their totally original pop-inspired songs wrapped in a multi-coloured coat of outstanding musicianship
Since then all of those young Whirling Furphies have continued to write, play, record and create music. Now, returning from the wilderness to the heart of their core business, the band have surprised themselves with how much love they have found in playing together again and how present the songs and tunes feel …. both for themselves and for their audiences.
The Whirling Furphies 2013 is a vibrantly special experience....warmly nostalgic for their old fans, exciting and always surprising for their new audiences!
