TIX: $40 + BF AVAIL HERE

DOORS/DINNER: 6:00PM | SHOWTIME 9:00PM

“One of the 50 Greatest singer songwriters of all time” says UNCUT MAGAZINE of John Murry.

A true craftsman of lyrical storytelling, Southern troubadour, his stories captivate with every word.

Cut from the same cloth as Elliott Smith, Lou Reed, Jeff Tweedy and Darkness On The Edge of Town-era Springsteen, alternative folk artist John Murry faces what he sees in the glass unflinchingly and then turns the mirror on us in ways that allow one to see their own reflection in sharper focus.

“naked honesty” 10/10 Top album of 2013 Mojo Magazine
"a masterpiece" 9/10  Uncut magazine
" a work of genius" 10/10 The Guardian

23/08/2014 - Cherrywood

CHERRYWOOD + SEAN MCMAHON & THE MOONMEN

SATURDAY 23RD AUGUST

FREE ENTRY, SHOWTIME 9:00PM

Cherrywood’s music features tales of lightning strikes, broken hearts, bar stools and prisons; all brought to life through an array of battered acoustic instruments and a bunch of bar-room vocals. The quartet’s love of Trad. Country and Folk music sits harmoniously with their Punk and Rock n’ Roll lineage to give Cherrywood a sound of their own.
After honing their craft touring around the country solidly for the last two years on the back of two singles, ‘No More’ and ‘Broken Heart for Christmas’, they’re finally releasing their debut album – Book of Matches.
Recorded by Matt Duffy (Graveyard Train, The Peep Tempel) during a bitter winter in an old country guesthouse, Book of Matches was laid down in two days, straight to tape with minimal overdubs and a swaggering live feel.
Book of Matches proves an earnest portrayal of the band’s live show – full of raw energy, fast paced and explosive sing-alongs, including those of guests’ Graveyard Train’s Josh Crawley and Harmony’s Erica Dunn, who add further texture to several songs with slide guitar and backing vocals. Catchy and immediate, Book of Matches shouts the listener a drink and dances them around the room.
New single ‘Could Wash No Devil from my Bones’ and its accompanying video captures Cherrywood’s character; a rambling late night tale of a child possessed, flowing booze and other late-night bluster and vices. Directed by Chris Matthews (Batpiss) and shot candidly on location between a fifty year old boxing ring and the band’s usual drinking holes, this video aims to celebrate the countercultures which have existed for decades in the back- streets of inner Melbourne.
Having just returned from a massive 3 month Australian tour supporting the album, Cherrywood are going from strength to strength. They’ve shared stages with Cory Branan (USA), The Von Ehrics (USA), Mick Thomas, Graveyard Train, Lanie Lane, Tex Perkins and a whole lot more. Wth plans for an international tour and a new album, 2014 is going to be a massive year for the lads.

ANDREW NOLTE & HIS ORCHESTRA

SUNDAY 24TH AUGUST 4:30PM (2 x sets)

FREE ENTRY

Performing since 2009, Andrew Nolte, his saxophone and his novelty dance orchestra have performed jazz festivals, jazz clubs, and live music venues to an astonishing amount of appreciation. The band, consisting of 8 highly trained musicians, features a cavalcade of roaring brass, wailing saxophones and a banjo, sousaphone, trap kit rhythm section that cannot be beat for authentic vintage style and taste. Playing from intricate original orchestrations from the Gatsby era, the band boasts an extensive repertoire to evoke any mood of the 1920s desired by any dancer, vintage lover, cocktail addicts etc. With its roots set deep in the post war era, when the wireless was king, the screen still silent, the bands influences can be found on any old shellac 78 disc from the period. Authenticity being a large focus of the group, enjoyment, amusement and a general great time are its greatest results as proven by the bands recent successes. Whether you are an afficianado or new to this crazy music, you will certainly find a new love for this often neglected period of popular music.

TALES OF ALES: DAINTON FAMILY BREWERY

FRIDAY 29TH AUGUST, 6PM

LEARNING IS FREE AND BEER IS CHEAP

Beer geeks, beer lovers and home brewers alike! Gather! If you love beer so much that you think about it daily, mention the word “beer” in almost every conversation, dream about mashing, attend as many tap takeovers in the beer bars around Melbourne that you possibly can – you DON’T wanna miss out on this event. Because now the time has finally come for the Brunswick craft beer hub - The Spotted Mallard - to host the Tales of Ales brewing masterclasses!

At our Tales of Ales events, we invite a new, exciting craft brewery to come and talk about their passion for brewing. Indulge in their delicious brews, while they take you through everything from the idea of a recipe, the characteristics of ingredients and to the execution of the brewing process itself. All brewers have been avid home brewers at one stage of their lives, and thus they are keen to teach you everything they know of the fine art that is brewing.

On Friday the 29th of August, Dan Dainton of Dainton Family Brewery will lead you through a wide range of his most highly rated brews.
Dainton Family Brewery is an Independent 100% Family owned operation brewing Authentic Hand Crafted Beer.
Dan, the brew-man, has spent the last 5 years in the brewing industry slaving away at his passion for crafting awesome beer. After years in a home-brew shop, winning numerous amateur awards, a stint at James Squire Portland Hotel as the solo brewer (including 2 silvers medals in 2012 at the Australian International Beer Awards) and many months brewing with the team at Holgate Brewhouse, it was time to move out and move on towards the dream of making his own brew.

Learning is free, beer is cheap!

So come on down and get your nerd on!
