A rock n roll wake for the late Lou Reed will take place on Saturday 11 January at the Spotted Mallard, Brunswick.

Mikelangelo and St. Clare will melt hearts with the songs of the Velvet Underground while hard hitting rock-punk legends Kim Salmon, Stu Thomas and Penny Ikinger plus guests will deliver Lou Reed hits and lesser known greats.
This three hour show will present the music of The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed (solo) from the earliest releases through to the ‘come back’ album New York as well as some of his more experimental work.

The idea for Love for Lou came from a teary night spent on velvet couch by Festival Director (Darebin Music Feast) and independent producer Ciel Fuller after hearing of his passing in December 2013.

“I’m still moved to tears of thanks and appreciation when I think about how much Lou Reed’s work has opened my world of music, philosophy and poetry. I decided that I wanted to put a kind of wake together for all the people I know who are also feeling this need to farewell him in a ceremonious way.

I’ve selected great musicians who I know will bring love, respect and excitement to his music and join in the spirit of the event. To really set the night apart from a regular gig I invited Patrick (Paddy) Donovan in to say a few words, given his strong standing in the industry but also his own terrifying journalistic experience with the man himself. Both Paddy and Mikelangelo have really helped with the musical direction and with making the show special and as meaningful as possible.

I am so impressed with everyone’s careful song selections and the time that they’ve put into making Love for Lou what it should be. There will be tears, but there will also be laughter, and I doubt there’ll ever be another night like this for me.”

Mikelangelo and St Clare create contemporary music that evokes other worlds and other eras. At Love for Lou they will bring Lou and Nico to the stage with the lullaby ballads of The Velvet Underground and Nico plus songs from Transformer. Mikelangelo will perform a song he recently penned in dedication to Reed called ‘Rock n Roll Angel’, based on the iconic ‘Sunday Morning’.

Kim Salmon (Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists) and Stu Thomas (Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Dave Graney and the Lurid Yellow Mist, The Stu Thomas Paradox) will perform songs from the 1970’s albums Coney Island Baby, Berlin, Transformer and Loaded.

Penny Ikinger (Sacred Cowboys) will play a tracks from a diverse selection of guitar driven albums. Ikinger will take centre stage with her version of ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ and join cameo guest Beast to deliver eighteen minutes of guitar madness with the stand-out track ‘Like a Possum’ from the 2000 release Ecstasy.

Thomas and Ikinger will accompany the other performers and are joined by James Seedy on drums, Miles Brown on keys and Andrew Watson on violin. Seedy will also give performances of some of his favourite tracks.

Patrick Donovan (Music Victoria) and Mick Epis (The Age) will re-enact interviews where Reed reduces top journalists into a muttering mess. Donovan will go on to perform the spoken word track ‘Sick of You’ from New York, and Epis will challenge reality when he brings his likeness for the man himself to the stage to perform the moving and insightful ‘Magician, Internally’ from Magic and Loss.

Bring your tissues, bring your memories and bring the friends who will understand. Let us treat you to a night you’ll never forget when we all show, our Love for Lou.
